Pictures
I have spent the last hour and a half trying to get pictures uploaded onto my blog and I was not successful as you can see. I have worked up an appetite in the process. It is Monday morning and they are serving crepes in the cafe. For all of you who were concerned that I wasn't going to get my chocolate/junk food fix--no worries. I will sit and enjoy my crepe and think of all of you.

Lynnel,
I watched a few minutes of a program about termites yesterday--sounds fascinating, right? Well, the program focused on how the simultaneous occurance of drought and termites had affected a West African country (presumably an ex-French colony; there was a scene in a classroom in which the teacher and kids were speaking French). Anyhow, the local chief was asked by the village elder to plead with the 'gods' for rain. He agreed and so they scarificed a goat and offered its blood as well as some food to the gods in their appeal for rain. My first thought was, 'dude, that's a perfectly good goat, there's lots of skinny little kids walking around the village who need that kind of sustenance and it's being wasted on phony gods'.
It made me realize just how fragile life is there, that a few months of drought can cause starvation, and that termites are a hassle they simply live with. Also, that just as we in the West are slaves to our possessions and comfortable lifestyle, the poor in the East are often enslaved by false gods and religious or political strife.
Glad you are enjoying work and life on the Mercy Ship. It is wonderful that you are not so bogged down with paperwork that you miss neat opportunities to connect with people.
Love you,
Becky
